When a cactus known as the “black samurai of the cactus world,” the Black King Maru, is deconstructed into the stitches, filling, and seams of cotton and fabric, what it loses is only the sensation of its spines—what it gains is a kind of life force that can be held in the hand and never withers.
Taiwanese independent handcraft brand hakkei (Eight Views) has officially released a new limited-edition work, “Little Black King Maru – Copiapoa” (Copiapoa Cinerea Guy), numbered HCCG26-0826. The piece will go on sale in a limited release on September 7, 2026, at 18:00 (GMT+8) through official channels, priced at NT$3,980.
Copiapoa cinerea is native to the Atacama Desert in Chile and is known for its grey-white waxy skin, dark areoles, and slow growth rate. Among collectors in its native region, it is regarded as one of the most aristocratic cacti. hakkei’s three-dimensional interpretation does not attempt to replicate its botanical form. Instead, it reinterprets the Black King Maru’s signature spherical silhouette, ribs, and areole structure through hand-sewn construction using all-cotton and premium fabrics. The piece stands approximately 220 mm tall and 200 mm wide, with a total weight of approximately 200 g. Each piece is handmade, so subtle differences in stitching and filling constitute its own unique character.
hakkei (Eight Views) was founded in Taiwan by its founder. Its core language is the so-called “Fabric Plant”—transforming the forms of caudex and foliage plants into touchable soft sculptures through hand-sewn construction. The brand has previously held workshops with BEAMS TAIWAN and exhibited collaborative fabric plants at events related to Shibuya PARCO, building a steady following among caudex plant enthusiasts and designer toy collectors.
This release of “Little Black King Maru – Copiapoa” does not include a pot. The brand has deliberately left this space open for collectors to match their own pots according to personal aesthetics, completing a second assembly. Each person is limited to one set; duplicate orders will be automatically cancelled by the system.
A Copiapoa cinerea from the Atacama Desert becomes, under hakkei’s needle and thread, a soft black sphere you can hold in your arms. The spines are gone, but that silent, slow-growing weight remains in another form.
