KAWS and his long-time collaborator AllRightsReserved (ARR) have released a teaser via social media, announcing that a new KAWS:HOLIDAY project is on the way. Against a pure black background, a black glossy COMPANION stands quietly at the centre. Its signature X-shaped eyes and rounded protrusions on either side of the head remain, but its face is covered by two large, bright yellow X’s, accompanied by the large text “SAVE THE DATE” in the same colour.
According to the announcement, full details will be officially revealed on September 15 at 10:30 PM EST / September 16 at 10:30 AM HKT.
Since its launch in 2018, KAWS:HOLIDAY has brought giant COMPANION installations to multiple destinations, including Seokchon Lake in Seoul, Taipei, Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong, Japan, outer space, Sanam Luang in Bangkok, Thailand, and Souq Al Mina in Abu Dhabi. Each time, COMPANION has been embedded into local scenes in different poses—lying down, floating, sitting quietly, ascending—from the water surface of Seokchon Lake to the 37-metre giant at Victoria Harbour, from the prayer pose at Sanam Luang to the luminous installation in Abu Dhabi.
This time, however, the teaser poster adopts a minimalist visual language: no location hints, no outline of the installation form, only the black COMPANION and two bright yellow X’s. Unlike previous teasers that relied on landmarks and scene-based narratives, this poster compresses all suspense into the opposition of colours—black and yellow, silence and warning. The bright yellow X covering the face seems to say: the location doesn’t matter; what matters is simply “what’s coming.”
From Seokchon Lake to outer space, COMPANION’s holiday has never stopped. And this time, where will it go? On September 16, the answer will be revealed.
