Celebrated Brazilian street artist Vitché and his wife Jana Joana spent most of Thursday on three large indoor wall mural installations for Os Brasileiros — an exhibition of Brazilian street art opening this Saturday (1.05.08) from 8 PM to Midnight at the Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art. Thanks to the gallery and the artists, we took some in-progress shots of their large flowing pieces done with brush, spray paint, stencils, and roller. Rendered mostly in black and white (at least during this shoot), Vitché’s use of red on his piece gives it a strong punch. While the show pieces had not yet been hung in the gallery, from what we saw there’s a wide variety from street art to outsider art — colorful and whimsical to clean and austere.
Curated by Seth and Elisa Carmichael, this ambitious exhibition showcases Brazilian culture by bringing together 40+ artists cutting across various "crews", schools of art, and styles. The artists include Akeni, Alexandre Anjo, Alexandre Yassu, Andre Firmiano, Binho Barreto, Binho Ribeiro, Bruno Kurru, Cena7, Ciro Schu, Dalata, Daniel Bileu, Dask Two, DOC, Does, Flavio Morais, Flavio Samelo, FLIP, Graphis, Hyper, Jana Joana, Jey, Kaleb, Marcella França, Mateus, Bailon, Milo, Pankill, Pato, Paulo Ito, Petite Poupee7, Prila Paiva, Raquel Schembri, Rodrigo Villas, Sesper, Suzue, Tatiana Guid, Thais Beltrame, Thiago Syen, Tiago Fazito, Tikka, Vitché, Yá!, and Zeila Trevisan.
The opening reception for part 1 will combine original paintings with live entertainment provided by Brazilian singer Katia Moraes and refreshments in the form of Brazilian wine from Rio Joe’s. Part 2 of the show opens on January 19th and runs through January 27th.
